Midnight Blockchain Launches as Cardano Partner Chain, Unveils Testnet for Data Protection Applications

On October 1, 2024, Midnight launched as a partner chain to Cardano. This blockchain focuses on data protection and can operate as either an L1 or L2. It’s designed to work well with other chains, which is a big deal for developers.

After the release of the Midnight 'Nightpaper,' the testnet quickly followed. This document outlines the project's smart contract design and how it uses zero-knowledge (ZK) technology to keep data and metadata safe. With this setup, developers can create applications that not only protect data but also comply with local regulations.

Midnight helps developers build data protection applications using its programming language, Compact. This language is based on TypeScript, a popular choice among developers. Anyone interested can join Midnight’s testnet to start building applications ahead of the mainnet launch.

What sets Midnight apart is its unique smart contract design, inspired by the Kachina whitepaper. It allows for switching between public and private ledgers using zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs). Specifically, ZK SNARKs provide transparency while keeping sensitive information secure through selective disclosure. This means developers can choose what data to make public.

Selective disclosure lets developers hide wallet addresses and transaction details, unless they decide to share that information with someone else. For more details on the technology and its applications, check out the Nightpaper.

Benjamin Beckmann, CTO of Midnight, shared, “ZKPs are tough to get right, but they are essential for creating data protection dApps that meet regulatory standards while ensuring safe data handling. We believe these tools are key for broader blockchain adoption. That’s why we designed Midnight’s programming language to empower developers to create enterprise-ready dApps using familiar tools. We’re excited to see the innovative projects that will come from the testnet launch.”

Eran Barak, CEO of Midnight, added, “Midnight is dedicated to bringing Web3 innovation to everyone through community collaboration and interoperability with other ecosystems. As we mentioned in our Nightpaper, we want any Web3 project to take advantage of Midnight’s capabilities, regardless of the chain they use. With this flexible design, Midnight aims to make programmable data protection and selective disclosure accessible for all kinds of applications.”
