The recent HBO documentary, “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,” directed by Cullen Hoback, claims to reveal the identity of Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. This film explores Bitcoin's origins and features key figures from its early days, including Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream.
As the documentary wraps up, it suggests that Peter Todd, a Bitcoin Core engineer, might be Nakamoto. Todd quickly denied this on X, saying, “I’ve done a lot of things in life that have put me in the spotlight. Not my first rodeo. But this might be crazier than before.”
Satoshi Nakamoto is the name used by the person who wrote the Bitcoin whitepaper. Many people have been speculated to be Nakamoto, but no one has been confirmed. Over the years, names like Craig Wright, Hal Finney, Charlie Lee, and Adam Back have come up in this mystery.
Before the documentary aired, betting odds fluctuated wildly about who HBO would name as Nakamoto. At first, late cypherpunk Len Sassaman was favored, but the odds soon shifted toward Nick Szabo, another notable figure from Bitcoin’s early history.
The search for Nakamoto is significant because this person is believed to hold over a million Bitcoins out of a total supply of 21 million. Any movement of these coins could greatly impact Bitcoin’s price.
As of now, Bitcoin is trading at $62,269.11, reflecting a decrease of 2.03% in the last 24 hours, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
