Ethereum Layer 2 Network Linea Launches Swiss-Based Association to Drive Ecosystem Growth and Governance
Ethereum Layer 2 network Linea has just announced the launch of the Linea Association. This is an independent, non-profit organization based in Switzerland.
The Association focuses on supporting the growth and development of Linea’s open-source technology and ecosystem. It also oversees Linea Mainnet, which is a zkEVM Layer-2 network created by Consensys. This network aims to scale Ethereum while keeping it secure and decentralized.
One of the main goals of the Association is to enhance Linea Mainnet's ongoing development. It aims to create a network that is fast, affordable, and secure for everyone, regardless of their economic or social background. Additionally, the Association wants to align closely with Ethereum Layer 1's operations and development.
Another important focus is to improve Linea’s decentralization. This will involve developing governance mechanisms and implementing decentralized sequencing and proof processes.
The Association will also assist developers in creating decentralized applications, or dApps, that provide a great user experience. These applications will be distributed to millions of users, especially through MetaMask. Engaging communities is another priority, with initial projects like Foxy, efrogs, and Linus already in the works.
Furthermore, the Association aims to empower users and businesses to manage valuable on-chain data, such as identity and property. Initial applications in this area include on-chain payments with MetaMask Card and identity verification projects using attestation registries like Verax.
Looking ahead, the Linea Association will act as a steward for protocol governance. It will ensure that social and technical goals for the network align well. A key part of this governance will be Tokenholder Governance. To facilitate this, the Association plans to introduce the LINEA token by the end of Q1 2025.
With the LINEA token, holders will have a say in governance decisions. While specific details about a snapshot date are still pending, Linea has completed its LXP Voyage. It is now focused on building an organically growing community, which currently has over 1.3 million verified addresses identifying Linea as their primary network. The LINEA tokens will be distributed to ecosystem contributors through a Token Generation Event, or TGE.
As a zkEVM ecosystem, Linea supports decentralized Web3 applications by connecting them with MetaMask’s Web3 user base. Its goal is to boost user engagement, technical progress, and security across the Web3 landscape. Right now, Linea boasts over one million monthly active users, has integrated 300 dApps, and has saved users more than $380 million in gas fees. All of this is aimed at making Web3 more secure and accessible for everyone.
